Friends:
Since Steve is off having fun at SIGGRAPH, I thought I'd answer some
questions that have been floating around:
1) Does Lightwave 3.5 Support Essence?
Not in the way you mean. There are two "crippled" textures in LW 3.5
- Crumpled and Bump Array. They are built directly into LW. None of the
other Essence textures will work directly with LW at present.
2) So when are you guys getting around to it?
We think the next generation of LW (4.0?) will have all the necessary
hooks for 3rd party procedural textures, and that our code will be completely
freed from all Imagine baggage at that time (e.g. it will not be
renderer-specific). Apex and NewTek have no formal agreement for any of this,
but the odds are pretty good that you'll see full-blown Essence on LW in that
timescale.
3) What do you mean by "work directly with Lightwave"?
As you many know, the Essence procedural textures are little
subroutines that must get called from the host renderer every time you want to
evaluate a surface. Unlike 3rd-party modification of staging files, you have
to know Allen pretty well to add 3rd-party procedural textures to the current
incarnation of LW. ;-)
However, Lightwave understands bitmaps just fine, so there is no
reason you can't use Forge to generate a bitmap you can map onto your objects
like any other bitmap. Forge bitmaps make great titling backdrops too, and
you aren't limited to what someone can fit on a CD of backdrops... :) So for
you wistful Imagine users out there, you do have a migration path. Sure, you
need more memory to use bitmaps than if Essence ran directly on LW. But on
the flip side, applying bitmaps will always be faster than any procedural
texture we could write. Texture animation gets a little trickier, but between
Forge and Lightwave you shouldn't have any major problems doing this.
Cheers,
Charles
